Key Features and Characteristics of the Thorens TD124 MKII:

  • Unique Drive System: The TD124 MKII utilizes a combination of a belt and an idler wheel. A low-noise, 4-pole AC motor drives a stepped pulley via a belt. The selected speed on the pulley then engages a rubber-tyred idler wheel, which in turn drives the inner rim of the heavy platter. This system aimed to isolate motor vibrations while providing the direct coupling benefits of an idler drive.
  • Heavy Platter: The turntable features a substantial, non-magnetic aluminum alloy platter (weighing around 3 kg, lighter than the original's iron platter). This high mass contributes to speed stability and reduces wow and flutter. A separate, lighter aluminum top platter with a clutch mechanism allows for quick record changes without stopping the motor.
  • Four Speeds: The TD124 MKII supports four speeds: 16⅔, 33⅓, 45, and 78 RPM, catering to a wide range of records. Speed selection is mechanical.
  • Adjustable Speed: Fine-tuning of the rotational speed (pitch control) is typically available, allowing for precise adjustment.
  • Robust Construction: Built with Swiss precision, the TD124 MKII features a sturdy, well-damped chassis, often made of cast aluminum, minimizing vibrations and external interference.
  • Tonearm Mounting Options: The TD124 MKII was typically sold as a motor unit without a tonearm, allowing users to choose their preferred tonearm. It features a removable armboard, making it compatible with various tonearm types and lengths (often SME tonearms were a popular choice). The MKII version often came with the Thorens TP 14 tonearm as a standard option.
  • Improved Aesthetics: The MKII version featured a more modern design compared to the original TD124, with a different platter mat and a slightly restyled frame.
  • Lower Magnetic Interference: A key improvement in the MKII was the use of a non-magnetic platter, making it more compatible with a wider range of phono cartridges, especially those with powerful magnets that could be affected by the original iron platter.
